Chilean telecoms group Mundo debuts with global debt tap

Two Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP offices and Claro & Cía in Santiago have helped Chilean telecoms company DB Terra – which operates locally as Mundo Pacífico – make its inaugural international notes offering for US$435 million.

Philippi Prietocarrizosa Ferrero DU & Uría (Chile) assisted the banks.

Latin Lawyer understands that international firm A&O Shearman also represented the banks but could not confirm this before publishing.

The deal closed on 20 April.

The issuer will use the proceeds to refinance existing debt and general corporate purposes related to its Mundo telecoms network in Chile. It may also use a portion of the funds for sustainability initiatives.

The deal comes amid a recent spout of debt deals involving Latin American telecoms assets. In March, Echecopar in Lima advised the Peruvian subsidiary of Vietnamese telecoms group Viettel on a US$83 million loan, with Peru’s Miranda & Amado acting for the lenders. Earlier this year, international firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP and EGFA in Buenos Aires helped Telecom Argentina carry out a US$600 million notes issuance, while international firm Linklaters and Argentina’s Beccar Varela advised the banks.
