Chile’s Copec buys hybrid renewables project from METLEN

Portaluppi, Guzmán & Bezanilla Abogados has advised Chilean energy company Copec on its acquisition of an Atacama hybrid renewable energy project from Greek energy and metals company METLEN Energy & Metals.

Philippi Prietocarrizosa Ferrero DU & Uría (Chile) acted for METLEN on the deal.

The transaction was signed on 11 September. The value remains confidential.

The Tamarico II project, located in Chile’s Atacama Region, comprises a 165-megawatt peak photovoltaic power plant and a 725-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, expandable to 925 megawatt-hours.

Under the agreement, the buyer, Copec Flux, will become the project’s sole owner once commercial operations begin.

The acquisition will be Copec’s third large-scale solar project since 2024, bringing its total solar generation capacity to some 550 megawatts peak. The project will join Copec’s existing Granja Solar and La Huella solar parks, as well as Copec Flux’s distributed generation and energy services businesses.

The deal supports Copec’s strategy to expand its renewable generation and energy storage portfolio.
